Case Scenario 2
How Coaching Works - even when you don't know it's working!
by Dave Elliott
To the world he appeared to be a phenomenally successful businessman; funny, engaging and personable. He hired a coach to take things to the next level and increase effectiveness. He wanted to improve his communication with a Senior Manager and improve his work/life balance. Common coaching goals.
Once in coaching, it did not take long to discover that things were not as they seemed. Underneath all of that well-groomed success was the angry young man that was fired from his very first job in his field and was resentful of the lack of educational options that were available to him as a child of parents with modest resources.
In the coaching process this incredibly successful businessman started to make some brand new distinctions very rapidly. Here's the best part of the story. Huge life-affirming changes in psychology that come rapidly never go unnoticed. People - including his spouse, child and employees - started to notice how much happier and "present" he appeared. His communication improved at work and at home. Funny thing is, he noticed it, too.
During a recent session, he couldn't wait to share a story. Just that morning he had gone out to walk his dog and soon realized that he had accidentally locked himself out of the house. I could hear the huge smile in his voice as he shared how just a couple months earlier - before coaching - that was the type of thing that would have made him "go ballistic," by throwing a brick through his own window, then go to work and take it out on the first unsuspecting target. Now, with new choices available to him, he found the humor in the situation. Then, from that state, it was easy to access his full resourcefulness as he reached into his wallet, whipped out a credit card and opened the locked door within seconds. (American Express - now you know why you 'don't leave home without it). In that moment, he fully realized that huge, groundbreaking shifts in psychology are "cross-contextual" - meaning they can't help but show up in other places. Imagine how pleased he was that in just a couple of months, a guy he brought in to help transform his business had actually helped transform his life.
So now, the question is, how would you like to transform your professional life?
